Nurse Talk: Immune Boosting Life Hacks

Being that I’m a registered nurse, you will occasionally see posts on health/nutrition topics on here. I approach life holistically- meaning I believe the Lord called us to be diligent in caring for our spirit, soul and body. Note, I don’t mean in a New Age, mystical and occult manner (far from it), rather in a practical and natural sense.

Here are some natural supplements that are very effective during the flu season, or just in general for keeping a strong immune system. I have personally taken these supplements at one time or another, so I know they are good. But again, this list is just for your information, it is not medical advice. I encourage you to research the supplements I list here, and reach your own conclusions!

NOTE: I am not paid to recommend these brands, they are my own personal preference. There are many brands on the market, I just found these to be quality and without other artificial additives.

Raw Garlic – antimicrobial, antiviral, lowers cholesterol, blood sugar and blood pressure. Excellent for overall health & immunity if taken on a regular basis

Sovereign Silver, Bioactive silver hydrosol – tons of benefits, one of the top immune builders. Can’t praise it enough! Can be used as a first aid treatment on skin and wounds as well

Nutri-Onn Black Currant Oil (cold pressed)   great for eye health, immune booster, as well as hair, skin and heart. Black currants are powerful little berries! I take it as a daily supplement. This jar lasts an entire MONTH!

Sibu Seaberry (Seabuckthorn) Puree – packed with almost all the vitamins (including the rare Vitamin P) and lots of Omega oils! Has a sour taste but goes well with grapejuice. This is a powerhouse of antioxidants

Gaia Herbs Olive Leaf Extract – one of the best ways to revamp your immune system. Fights cold sores (oral herpes). Very powerful antiviral and antioxidant. Excellent first aid when you feel you’re getting sick!

Herb Pharm Super Echinacea – it’s a 4 part plant tincture (root, leaf, flower & seed). Powerful and has tons of benefits. Echinacea is a super plant! Great as a first aid treatment. Great for colds, flu, infections

Nature Works Swedish Bitters – warning, it’s nasty, so swallow fast! But it has an excellent blend of herbs that are time tested and effective. Used for lots of ailments and general immune health. It shouldn’t be taken on a regular basis because it can mess with your digestion. Only for occasional treatment.

Nature’s Way Zinc Lozenges – these are a more natural form of Zicam and they have echinacea and vitamin C as well! They were awesome for keeping the flu at bay (at least for awhile) this year in my case.

Hawaiian Spirulina – this is a superfood. Basically has almost all the vitamins imaginable, all the minerals, carotenoids and phytonutrients such as chlorophyll. If you’re anemic, need more energy and especially if you want to boost your immunity, this is your thing

I didn’t include a host of other supplements like elderberry syrup and wheatgrass etc. Consider this a starter pack.

Where to buy

Some of these can be a bit pricey, but it’s an investment too. Consider it in this way: “pay the farmer now (food & supplements), or pay the doctor later”. Which do you prefer? See if you can find them at your local healthfood store. The two best places to get them online

Amazon if you have Prime shipping, the prices for supplements are sometimes better than in stores

Vitacost  you can buy in bulk and they offer free 2 day shipping at a certain price! They also have coupon codes they send occasionally so the price is better than other places!
