For the Mind

Top Resources for Young Adults

Summer is here! I personally go to the library more often when summer arrives, and I also get to cram in more reading time to make up for the whole year!

I have a lot of resources (videos, audio and books) I want to recommend for young adults this summer.

Here are some thoughts about the Christian Young Adult life:

  • It is imperative that young adults use their time wisely in these precious years of youthfulness and times when their mind is sharp, and use it for God’s glory
  • Young adults need to have a solid foundation of Biblical knowledge and truth
  • In addition, young adults need quality resources to inspire, motivate and teach them life lessons, keep them rightly/properly “entertained” (for lack of a better word), so that they do not waste time with worldly, superficial and useless movies, books, etc.
  • Christian Young adults should stay away from sinful, superficial, movies, books, video-games and literature because it taints their soul, ruins the Christian testimony, and keeps them from being fruitful for Christ
  • Finding quality, inspiring and useful resources for young adults is difficult but not impossible- and it is totally worth the investment!
  • What you feed your mind with, will determine what and who you become. If you consistently feed it with useless information, trash, social media, video-games and such, you will become an empty, apathetic personality. If you feed your mind with the right materials, you will surely grow up in your:
    1. spiritual walk, 2. in your intelligence, 3. discernment 4. personality and 5. wisdom
  • Pray that God will lead you to the right resources for His glory. And He will!

Let our sons in their youth be as grown-up plants, And our daughters as corner pillars fashioned as for a palace
Psalm 144:12

Here are some resources (books, video, audio) for young men and women to get you started:

The Road to Unafraid (5 STARS):  The autobiography of Captain Jeff Struecker, the story of “Black Hawk Down” in Somalia. One of my very favorite books! It shows God’s guidance all the way through, the man’s faith, salvation and transformation, and the unbelievable story of courage and honor of our troops. It is a great story for young boys but also for young ladies. What I like about him is that Captain Struecker honors the Lord and does not put the curse words so common in the military. See a little of the trailer to get a taste of the book!

Here I Stand- A Life of Martin Luther (5 STARS): An excellent resource about the Reformation. Chock full of historical information and theology, it is the TOP book to learn every detail about Martin Luther from his childhood to his death, as well as the atmosphere of that time and much more. The author is a gifted writer, making the book enjoyable. It is a more difficult reading comprehension level for some who may not be trained in old English, but it makes it all the more interesting to read. For those who still can’t make themselves read it, there is an audiobook pictured below that can be accessed. Great for family time!

Discerning Truth and The Ultimate Proof of Creation (5 STARS): Two of the best books for young adults to train them how to answer atheists and defend the Biblical worldview of Creation against Evolution. Written by Ph.D Astrophysicist Dr. Jason Lisle, among the top Christian scientists of our time, these books should be in every library. Discerning Truth is like a resource book for learning Logic and using logical arguments in discussions. The Ultimate Proof  is a book that helps people understand the connection between Genesis and science and how the Science supports the Bible.

Unlocking the Mysteries of Genesis DVD Series (5 STARS): This is a treasure trove of information for families, and youth groups and churches alike. My family already bought this series and we plan on having potlucks with friends and viewing these videos this summer! It teaches Christians to think Biblically about our origins, Creation and science. It is a dynamic and interesting presentation for Millenials. This series has had an impact all around the world in many countries. Topics include Life Science, Earth Science, Astronomy/Cosmos and Origin of the Universe, Dinosaurs, Ice Age, and more!

Orchestra of Exiles Documentary Video (4 STARS): Very interesting and moving documentary about the heroic and passionate actions of famous Polish violinist Huberman during WWII. We watched it with the whole family and enjoyed discovering this piece of history that is not talked about in history books. I’ll let you find out more about the story by actually watching the documentary! It can be found on Netflix, (and I think) Amazon, and PBS website.

L’Abri by Edith Schaeffer (5 STARS): The immensely interesting autobiography of the Schaeffer family (Francis and Edith Schaeffer), a 20th Century family of missionaries and (her husband a renown theologian and man of apologetics). Edith Schaeffer writes as if talking to a friend, and takes you on the journey they had of serving the Lord their whole life in beautiful Switzerland and how God used their ministry to have an international impact. It is a most beautiful story of God’s work, and I couldn’t put it down!

Story of a Secret State (5 STARS):  A thrilling true story of the life of Jan Karski a brave, passionate and intelligent underground worker of the Polish Resistance. It is an edge-of-your-seat book. It boils your blood, breaks your heart, and makes you smile and rejoice when there is triumph, and brings a renewed respect for the people who sacrificed so much in WWII and for the brave Polish people. This would make an AMAZING movie! Great book for young men- but I recommend it for young ladies as well.

“My Italian Secret” Documentary + “It Happened in Italy” Book (4 STARS): These are stories you will never find in history books. You will learn something about Italy that you never knew before- things that Italians did in WWII that will surprise you! The documentary is fun to watch with the whole family. You can also read the book which tells the same thing as the documentary.

Acts & Facts Monthly Magazine (5 STARS): The best monthly magazine out there- GUARANTEED! The Institute for Creation Research offers this amazing ministry of training families, youth and lay people with scientific articles written by Astrophysicists, Earth Scientists, Physicians and other Scientists. What’s even better is, it’s FREE! You can subscribe to receive this in your mailbox every month, and you and your family will get to read top scientific articles that will inform you and train you to be a great Creation science and Biblical worldview thinker!

One of their team members, a NASA astronaut Jeffrey Williams, is actually now in orbit in outer space, and has LIVE tweeting and videos! Follow him on twitter and Facebook.

Memories Before and After the Sound of Music by Agathe von Trapp (4 STARS): We all know the “Sound of Music” movie, and the lovely Von Trapp family! My siblings and I watched it many times as little kids. I was intrigued to learn more about their true life story by reading a book written by the oldest Von Trapp children. It is fun to see the differences from their true life and the movie. It was interesting to learn what they thought of the movie Sound of Music too.

Things We Couldn’t Say (5 STARS): An amazing book of courage, faith and sacrifice! I personally did not read it yet, but I can’t wait to get my hands on it. But I can guarantee it is absolutely intriguing and cannot be put down- because my siblings already read it and they cannot believe I didn’t start reading it yet! Great insight into WWII times, and underground activity.

  1. Looks like you like the same kind of stories I do! I think I’ll be pulling several books off this list. And I’ve been wanting to watch Orchestra of Exiles for a while now. 🙂

We just started doing a Sunday School class on the canon of Scripture, and one of the books we are using is The Inerrant Word- I got excited to see that Mr. Waymeyer wrote for it!

    1. Thank you for the comment Dani! It was fun seeing what you read and I’m excited that you will be check out some of the books I listed. Yes, the Orchestra of Exiles is an interesting documentary! I apologize for the late reply, this weekend has been busy- we’ve had a family with 10 children visit us and sleep overnight so we had to prepare, and we went to the fair for the first time in our life too 😀

I started reading the Inerrant Word but now have to get back to it. Looking forward to see what pastor Waymeyer wrote too! Good to hear from you and looking forward to hear from you again!
