Midweek Music XI: A song for Resurrection week

I generally do not appreciate when hymns are re-worked and the original melodies are adapted or completely changed. Most often the modern adaptations are not the best. Besides, I wouldn’t like it if someone changed the melody to my songs cause they thought it sounds better that way, would you?

However….this adapted hymn I’m sharing with you is an exception. The hymn “And Can It Be” was adapted to a new melody. It is quite significant that I can say I actually love this rendition of the hymn, because it is one of my favorite hymns, and I could not imagine changing this hymn in any way, knowing how the original melody, so powerful and triumphant, perfectly complements the deep truths expressed in the hymn.

Yet, I think you too will enjoy the quality, depth, and worshipful mood of this adapted melody. I think it beautifully reflects the awe and gratitude we feel when we think of Christ’s sacrifice, and then it climaxes in such an uplifting manner that will have your heart singing along.

I had in plan to share this song for awhile now in our Midweek Music series, but I wanted to find the perfect time, a special time when the song’s full value would be appreciated and I think that Resurrection week is truly the right time…

I took the melody from youtube and put together this little video with lyrics and images to complement the song, especially for you all. I hope you enjoy it.

Meditate on the words as you listen to the song and remember to thank our Savior, Christ Jesus our Lord for His Amazing love

But He was wounded for our transgressions,
He was bruised for our iniquities;
The chastisement for our peace was upon Him,
And by His stripes we are healed.
(Isaiah 53:5)

  1. I totally agree with you about most adapted versions of hymns. But boy do I think this one really conveys the same power and conviction of the original. I was really touched by this rendition.

    So very thankful for you sharing this one.

  2. I love this version of “And can it be”! I agree with you on songs being changed from their original melody. But I found I sometimes like the other version of a song instead of the original melody. Lovely pictures! Thanks for the video.
