Puritans

Since it’s school season, and homework makes up most of our day, I thought it would be interesting to learn something new about school!

How drab that must sound to you.

But cheer up little ladies- this interesting piece of information is not as un-interesting as you may think!

DID YOU KNOW….

The first public school in America was started by Puritans in 1635 in Boston! (Bet most of you didn’t read that in your history book- unless you’re homeschooled).

Back then, only boys went to school. So that meant girls like you stayed home to help their mothers. Interesting huh?
It was a Latin school. Four of the signers of the Declaration of Independence all went to that school: Benjamin Franklin, Samuel Adams, John Hancock and Robert Paine.

The first classes were in the home of the schoolmaster- or principal. (I’m sure that made everyone behave perfectly, because in those days, schoolmasters carried a whipping stick with them for naughty children). Then the school moved in a building on “School Street”.

And for us older folks, did you know that the Puritans also founded Harvard and Yale Universities?
Now whenever you hear those names, you’ll remember that Christians were the ones who laid the foundation for a good education in America!
