For the Mind

Do you read?

For all the bookworms out there…Here are some quotes about the virtues and benefits of reading

Read many good books but dwell in the Bible
-Charles Spurgeon

The things I want to know are in books; my best friend is the man who’ll get me a book I ain’t read
-Abraham Lincoln

Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.
-Joseph Addison

Books: chocolate for the brain
-Unknown

A book is a gift you can open again and again
-Garrison Keillor

The man who does not read good books has no advantage over the man who can’t read
-Mark Twain

A home without books is like a body without a soul
-Marcus Tullius Cicero

-Charles Spurgeon

  1. I too love Spurgeon! I also enjoy C.S. Lewis. Here’s one from His Classic Works:
“No man who values originality will ever be original. but try to tell the truth as you see it, try to do any bit of work as well as it can be done for the work’s sake, and what men call originality will come unsought.”
I kind of ties in with your friend Amanda’s verse in Col 3:23.

    1. Hello! ๐Ÿ™‚ Thanks for the visit and the comment. I am glad to hear you’re also a Spurgeon reader! By God’s grace he was a faithful man who did not compromise and was a blessing for generations. May we also be the same.

As for Lewis, I will be writing an article concerning him sometime soon…so stay tuned!

  2. Thanks for sharing these quotes, Rebekah! I think the one that stood out to me with an “amen” was the first, “Dwell in the Bible.” And then I just laughed over “Books: chocolate for the brain.” ๐Ÿ˜‰ Yep! ๐Ÿ˜€

My favorite books to read are those that, when I leave, I am challenged to live my life better for Jesus than before. That, to me, is a worthwhile book.

    ~Amanda

“And whatsoever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;” Colossians 3:23

    1. Spurgeon truly mastered the art of quotables didnโ€™t he?

Agree with your opinion of worthwhile books- truly the ones that turn us to focus on Christ are a blessing.

      Glad you stopped by!
